The Department of Epidemiology conducts scientific research, provides training, and offers expertise and facilities to support clinical research.

Epidemiologic research is central to our department: Studying the occurrence of a disease outcome in a population in relation to it’s determinants. Determinants include predictive as well as causal factors, whereas outcome variables contain the broad spectrum of (other) risk factors, diseases, course of a disease, burden of disease and (health care) costs. Medical statistics, Health Technology Assessment (HTA), decision analysis and bioinformatics are important disciplines for epidemiologic research and form an integral part of the department.

The overall focus of the department is on “Life course epidemiology of chronic diseases”. Research is organised in four disease areas: Chronic pulmonary diseases, Psychiatry (organised within the Interdisciplinary Center for Psychiatric Epidemiology), Cardiovascular diseases and Cancer. Within and between these areas we have a particular interest in co-morbidity and application in clinical practice.

Under mission and organization you will find more information on the thematic focus of the Department and our scientific expertise. (Future) bachelor, master en PhD students are invited to take a look at the information on epidemiological training. Research support is offered by the section TCC, which hosts the Clinical Research Desk (CRD) for UMCG researchers. You can meet the individuals that make up the Department on the staff pages.
